When Sharks in the Flyfishing Business Smell Blood in the Water

Had unsolicited drop by yesterday.  Got the follow up note after sending him packing.  Note is right out of scamming 101.  Didn’t know the Nigeria internet scams can show up at your door?

Zach,

Maybe he was stopping by to take the staff on a spin in the Targus Indy Car?

I did not mean to blindside you today. I was on my way back from my plastic bin supplier and decided to pop in and chat with you a bit. I do know some things that could be of interest to you:

  1. Chris came to my place a few weeks ago and wanted to see if there was anything he might do for me. I gave him a tour of our warehouse where he observed our fly inventory and materials process center. His comment was I had no idea I need to get my mind around all of this. What you have versus what I have been told you have is way different. I have since heard from him and he indicated he was working on another project and would not be available to work with me.

  1. I have 100,000 dozen flies in my warehouse!

  1. I have a factory in Thailand with 60 tyers that are pretty good.

From what I suspect and I am unwilling to put it is writing but would be willing to discuss it with you in person. I may be able to be of assistance to you. Please give me a call at your earliest convenience. I will invite you to come to Woodland and set down and talk about where we might find some common ground.

I also have access to some pretty serious capital if needed.

Wayne Richey

  1. A few things come to mind…

    1) Wayne Richy = Targus … for those not in the know.

    2) Targus = crap rods, reels, hooks, flies, materials….basiclly what ever they make.

    3) Targus ripped of a few of my patterns for a while and what I learned is that my 5 year old son is really not that bad of a fly tier as he can tie S&M nymphs better then commercial fly tiers that work for Targus. That said he is only good for 1-2 flies and then looses focus. He is not really big on following recipes yet.

    4) Public Service Anoucement: If you have serious capital and want to make money…DO NOT INVEST IN THE FLY FISHING INDUSTRY….If you want to work your ass off, loose money, break even, then subsist on meager wages or a salary to then watch that said income fluctuate with peoples overall disposable income, THEN dump that money into a fly shop, fly company, outfitting operation, lodge, etc.

Wayne Ritchie is a liar, a cheat, a scammer, and a world class bastard. He should rot in hell for all of eternity.

Thought I saw circling vultures over the Idylwilde campus before he drove in.

No person has left a longer trail of destruction in the fly fishing industry. If he has access to “pretty serious capital”, he must have paid back the $4,000,000 to his original investors, paid the IRS the $250,000 in back payroll taxes and got out of hot water with the Thai Government. He cheats, bribes, lies, and steals for personal gain. He is a scumbag and a pervert.

Fifteen some-odd years ago Wayne Richey came into a fly shop I was in, said he was looking for fly designers for Targus, and I was foolish enough to give him a few samples. A year later I saw those patterns in a fly catalog (my name was nowhere to be seen.) I could have bought a fleet of jet skis with those royalties!

  7. Jimbo says:

I hear you Justin! I showed him a couple rock tosses and next thing I know he is out there saying he invented them.

  8. Ivonete says:

i like the “Keep Running!” and the “I Believe I Can Fly!” stickers!!too bad im stuck in Canada… I’ll buy them next time when i go back to Taiwan.. which is like 1 or 2 years later.. hofuleply at that time, youll still have extra stock for them (not jinxing you >_<)..
