Once again the boys from the Gig Harbor Fly Shop put together a nice piece of instructional video regarding tube flies and depth control. I would add a couple points onto EZ’s presentation.
- If you choose to use a tungsten bead or cone for your additional weight use caution. You need to line the inside of the tungsten cone or bead otherwise it will fray your line as it slides back and forth.
- Not all flies sink at the identical rates when equal amounts of weight are added. Before choosing the size of weight you want to add to your tube fly first examine the fly. If it is tied sparse it is going to get down fast with minimal additional weight. On the other hand if the fly is heavily dressed with a thick dubbed body it will require quite a bit more weight to achieve a fast sink rate.
- If you choose to use Worm Weights on your leader to add weight I suggest you watch this tutorial on casting.
