This blog attracts a wide range of readers who vary in fly fishing experience, spanning the spectrum from fishing veterans and guides to the casual enthusiast. Many of us are familiar with words that have become common in fishing culture. I thought it only fair to those not so familiar with the fishing lexicon to highlight, define and instruct on the use of some key words and phrases. Today’s word is “Blown”
Common Definition and Root
Blown (blohn) adj. 1. distended, swollen or inflated 2. destroyed, inoperative, ruined or spoiled 3. panting and out of breath 3. extremely high on marijuana 4. cylinder severely damaged or ruined under mechanical stress.
Fishing Definition
Blown (blohn) adj 1. swollen river with too much water volume to fish effectively or float safely 2. muddy or dirty river where visibility is zero, chance of catching a fish is also zero. 3. highly unlikely that a fish will see your fly 4. extremely high on marijuana
or Blew v. 1. as in “_______ an opportunity”—- Fish eats the fly but hook-set was not consummated by angler (9 times out of 10 this is the fish’s fault and is no way related to angler’s skills)
Examples Adj.
“Not fishing tomorrow. Just checked the graph and the river is blown!”
“I’m totally blown right now because I don’t have to get up early and fish my clients tomorrow.”
“Dude! with all the rain we got and the snow level going up the rivers are on their way to blowing out.”
“Drove home and all the feeder creeks along the way are puking mud, river has to be blown.”
Examples V.
Angler 1: Dude I was watching you fish that run and it looked like you got grabbed?
Angler 2: Yeah I thought I felt something.
Angler 1. Really? There was a huge boil and flash right where your fly was. It kind of looked like you yanked the line before the fish turned and blew the grab.
Angler 2. It was just a light pluck and I don’t think the fish ever had the fly.
